The Geology and Geography of
Shuswap National Park
Landform Region
Shuswap National Park is located in Salmon Arm. This means that Shuswap National Park is in the Western Cordillera landform region. This landform region runs along the western edge of Canada. It is full of mountain ranges that are seperated by plateaus and valleys. You can tell that these mountains are geologically young because of their jagged appearance. When the Pacific plate forced it way under the North American plate causing much folding, faulting and volcanic activity, the result was the Western Cordillera. Overall, the Western Cordillera is lightly populated and most live in farming and mining towns.

Vegetation Region
Shuswap National Park is in the Cordilleran Vegetation region. Basically, soils of all types are found in this region. The distribution of each soil type depends on the particular elevation, slope, rainfall and vegetation cover of each area, and in the Cordilleran, there is a lot of different land types; some parts are mountainous and others are flat. In the part of the Cordilleran that Salmon Arm is in, the soil is rich enough to grow both coniferous and deciduous trees.

Ecozone
Shuswap National Park is in the Montane Cordillera ecozone which means that it has a lot of mountain ranges, plains and plateaus. Popular human activities include tourism, forestry, and agriculture. Tourism here in Montane Cordillera includes sight-seeing, skiing, hiking, and more. Forestry in this ecozone is very popular. Although in Salmon Arm, the forest industry due to economic reasons has been closed down since 2008. There is also a lot of agricultural activity in the Montane Cordillera because the soil is very rich. Orchards and vineyards are popular here while cattle ranching is popular throughout the rest of the land (in plateaus and valleys).

Soil Region
The soil region that Shuswap National Park is located in is the Complex Soils of Mountain Areas. This means that there is a lot of rain which gives the plant life excellent growing conditions. It also is very rich with nutrients, a lot of humus. Also, rainfall leaches minerals deep in the soil. So overall, Shuswap National Park is great for plant growth.
